In order to understand and compare

  •  device losses (switching and conduction),
  •  different heatsinks,
  • device types, and
  • operating scenarios

your converter or power system must be in steady state. To reach steady state can require many switching cycles, especially when dealing with motor drives and other large converters.

There is a fundamental issue

An accurate simulation of the switch transition is required to calculate switching losses. Or isn't it?

With the thermal module we use datasheet curves to "lookup" what the losses will be at a given Tj, current, voltage, etc. This allows an ideal switch transition to be used, which in turn allows users to maintain a typical PSIM simulation speed - FAST.

In this webinar we cover how to trace out datasheet curves with our curve import tool and show

  • a comparison between SiC and IGBT losses and how it can be easily automated in a motor drive application
  • a comparison between regular Si MOSFET and GaN in a totem pole PFC application
